Accounting Services in Corsicana, TX: Which Ones You Need

Accounting services in Corsicana, TX usually mean four separate jobs: bookkeeping, payroll, tax compliance, and a financial statement engagement when a bank or an agency asks for one. Most Navarro County businesses do not need all four at once. This guide, written September 29, 2026 for Texas businesses, explains what each one covers and who typically asks you for it.

Key takeaways

  • Bookkeeping is the monthly work. It is what makes every other service possible, and it is the one most Corsicana businesses buy first.
  • Payroll runs on a fixed federal and Texas calendar. Form 941 is due April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31; Texas Workforce Commission wage reports follow the same quarterly rhythm.
  • Tax compliance in Texas is federal plus a franchise report due May 15, even for many businesses that owe no franchise tax.
  • A compilation, review or audit is not something you choose for yourself. A lender, a bonding company, a grantor or a state agency names the level it will accept.

What “accounting services” covers in Corsicana, TX

The phrase is broad enough to be unhelpful on its own. In practice, an accounting firm in Corsicana sells four distinct things, and they are priced and scheduled differently.

  • Bookkeeping — recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and closing the books each month so the numbers mean something.
  • Payroll — paying people, making the tax deposits on time, and filing the quarterly and annual returns that follow.
  • Tax compliance and planning — the federal return, the Texas franchise report, sales tax, and the decisions made before year end rather than after it.
  • Financial statement engagements — a compilation, a review or an audit, produced for somebody outside the business who needs to rely on the numbers.

Anderson, Marx & Bohl PC has worked from 119 N Main St in Corsicana since 1972 and provides all four. Which ones you actually need depends on your size, your payroll, and who is asking you for financial statements.

Bookkeeping is the monthly close everything else rests on

Bookkeeping is not data entry. It is the discipline of getting the general ledger to agree with the bank, the loan statements, the payroll records and the sales tax you collected, then closing the month so the figures can be used.

When the close is current, a tax return takes days instead of weeks, a lender gets what it asked for on the first request, and you can answer a question about margin without guessing. When it is not current, every other service gets more expensive, because the first thing anyone has to do is clean up the ledger.

For a Corsicana retailer or restaurant, the monthly close also carries the sales tax reconciliation. Corsicana’s combined rate is 8.25% — 6.25% Texas state, 1.50% city and 0.50% Navarro County (Avalara, read September 29, 2026). That money is collected on the state’s behalf, and the ledger has to show it separately from revenue.

Our payroll and bookkeeping services in Corsicana cover the monthly close and the reporting that comes off it. If your books live in QuickBooks, the practical detail is in our guide to working with a QuickBooks accountant in Corsicana.

Payroll runs on a calendar you do not control

Payroll is the accounting service with the least forgiveness in it, because the deadlines are set by the IRS and the Texas Workforce Commission, and they do not move for a busy month.

The federal filings, read from the IRS on September 29, 2026: Form 941 is filed quarterly, by the last day of the month after the quarter ends — April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31. Form 940, the annual FUTA return, is due January 31. Deposits of withheld income tax, Social Security and Medicare run on their own semiweekly or monthly schedule, separate from the return.

In Texas there is no state income tax to withhold, but there is state unemployment tax. The Texas Workforce Commission requires quarterly wage reports and tax payments by the last day of the month following the end of the calendar quarter (TWC, read September 29, 2026) — the same four dates as Form 941.

A late deposit is priced by how late it is, not by how much you owe. The IRS failure-to-deposit penalty steps up in four bands, and the bands do not stack: you pay the higher rate, not the sum.

Tax compliance for a Texas business is federal plus a state report

Texas has no personal income tax, so the state side of compliance is not a return on profit. It is the franchise report, and it catches businesses that assume they have nothing to file.

Per the Texas Comptroller, read September 29, 2026: the annual franchise tax report is due May 15. The no-tax-due revenue threshold for the 2026 and 2027 report years is $2,650,000. Above it, the rate is 0.375% for retail and wholesale and 0.75% for other business types, with an EZ computation rate of 0.331% available under $20 million in total revenue. Below the threshold no franchise tax is owed, but an entity registered in Texas still has an information report to file — which is where the penalty usually comes from, not the tax.

The federal side depends on how the business is organized. Our guide to business tax services in Corsicana sets out which return each entity type files and when. For individuals and households, see tax preparation and planning in Corsicana, and our 2026 filing guide.

Compilation, review or audit: somebody else picks the level

This is the service most business owners have never had to think about until the day a third party asks for it. The three levels differ in how much independent work sits behind the statements, and they are not interchangeable.

  • Compilation — the accountant presents management’s figures in proper financial statement form. It is the lightest of the three and provides no assurance.
  • Review — the level in the middle. As our own audit and review services page puts it, a review provides limited assurance and “can be a more cost-effective way to meet creditor/agency reporting needs when an audit is not required.”
  • Audit — the deepest engagement, with testing, confirmations and an examination of controls behind the opinion.

Who asks for which varies, and the request usually arrives with the requirement already fixed. A bank renewing a line of credit, a bonding company qualifying a contractor, a franchisor, a grantor, or a state oversight body will each name a level. The useful move is to ask exactly which one before you commission anything, because paying for an audit when a review would satisfy the lender is a common and expensive mistake.

The firm’s audit work in and around Navarro County covers school districts, municipalities, tribal governments and other government entities, and nonprofit organizations, along with businesses in more specialized industries — construction contractors, payroll leasing companies and manufacturers among them.

Which accounting services a Corsicana business needs, by stage

A rough guide, not a rule. The right answer depends on your payroll, your debt, and whether anyone outside the business relies on your numbers.

  • Owner-operator, no employees. Bookkeeping and an annual return. Keep the franchise report on the calendar even if no tax is owed.
  • First employees. Add payroll. This is the point where the deposit calendar above starts to matter and where doing it yourself gets expensive fastest.
  • Bank debt or a bonding requirement. Add a financial statement engagement at whatever level the lender or surety specifies, and plan the close around its deadline.
  • Government entity or nonprofit. An audit is usually required rather than optional, and the reporting deadline is set by the funding source or the state.

If you are still deciding who does this work rather than what the work is, our guides to choosing a small business accountant in Corsicana and to a full-service CPA firm in Navarro County cover that side of it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a CPA firm for bookkeeping, or is a bookkeeper enough?
For recording and reconciling, a bookkeeper is often enough. The case for a CPA firm is that the same people who close your books also file your returns and can sign a review or audit if one is ever required — so the work does not have to be redone by somebody else in April.

My Texas business made under $2.65 million. Do I still file anything with the state?
Usually yes. Per the Texas Comptroller, read September 29, 2026, revenue below the $2,650,000 threshold for the 2026 and 2027 report years means no franchise tax is due, but a registered entity still has an information report due May 15. Missing it is a filing problem, not a tax one, and it is avoidable.

How much does an accounting service cost in Corsicana?
It depends on transaction volume, headcount and how current the books are, so a quote follows a conversation rather than a price list. The one reliable pattern is that a clean monthly close lowers the cost of everything downstream.

Can I switch accounting firms in the middle of a year?
Yes. The practical work is transferring the ledger, the payroll records and the prior returns, and agreeing who files the next quarterly return so nothing falls between the two firms.
