What’s New for Tax Season 2025? IRS Updates Texas Families Should Know

As tax season approaches, many Texas families are already wondering: What’s different this year? At Anderson, Marx & Bohl PC, we’re committed to keeping you informed — and ahead of the curve — when it comes to IRS updates, tax credits, and filing changes that impact you and your family.

Whether you’re filing as an individual, head of household, or for a small family-run business, here are the key IRS updates for the 2025 tax season you should know about:

1. Standard Deduction Has Increased

Good news for most taxpayers: the standard deduction has been adjusted for inflation.

For tax year 2024 (filed in 2025), here are the new standard deduction amounts:

  • Single filers: $14,600 (up from $13,850)
  • Married filing jointly: $29,200 (up from $27,700)
  • Head of household: $21,900 (up from $20,800)

This means many families will see a slightly reduced taxable income — but it also affects how you calculate whether itemizing still makes sense.

2. Child Tax Credit Adjustments

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) remains at $2,000 per qualifying child, but phase-out thresholds and refundability rules continue to evolve. The IRS is also reviewing legislation that may increase the refundable portion of the credit, but this is still pending final approval at the time of writing.

Tip: Be sure your child’s Social Security number is accurate and filed on time to qualify for the credit.

3. Home Energy Tax Credits Expanded

Families making energy-efficient upgrades to their Texas homes may benefit from an expanded Residential Clean Energy Credit, offering up to 30% back on qualifying improvements, such as:

  • Solar panels
  • Geothermal heating systems
  • Energy-efficient windows or doors

These credits apply to purchases made through 2032, but must be claimed in the year the expense was incurred.

4. Electric Vehicle (EV) Tax Credits Refreshed

The Clean Vehicle Credit now includes both new and previously owned EVs. The credit:

  • Offers up to $7,500 for qualifying new EVs
  • Offers up to $4,000 for eligible used EVs
  • Includes income limits and vehicle price caps for eligibility

Tip: The credit can now be applied at the time of purchase — not just at tax time.

5. Medical Expense Deduction Threshold Stays at 7.5%

You can still deduct unreimbursed medical expenses that exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). This is especially helpful for families managing large medical bills or ongoing treatments.

6. Important Filing Deadlines for 2025

Mark your calendars:

  • Tax season officially opens: January 27, 2025 (expected)
  • Filing deadline: April 15, 2025 (unless extended)
  • Deadline to contribute to IRAs or HSAs for 2024 tax year: April 15, 2025
